[Not exactly AU- most of the more recent stuff will be canon, but I'm going to fill in some ENORMOUS gaps for history's sake]
Kanda was born in a time of warfare. The shogunate was beginning to collapse, and long dormant clans were starting to awaken and groups of radicals were being born. His father was a seasoned warrior who died in battle for the 'honor of the shogunate' while Kanda's mother was still pregnant, but she too died after childbirth. Kanda was then raised by his father's brother, who was also quite accomplished in the art of swordsmanship. Even so, this man also refused to partake in any sort of war. He was unmarried and preferred not to take sides, so he instead opted to spend his time training Kanda to protect himself and his name in the future. Kanda was a quick learner, and he had absorbed much about the art of war from this man. It's no speculation that Kanda respected him greatly. Even so, this temporary peace that he had found with his uncle would not last forever.
When Kanda was twelve he was already quite accomplished as a swordsman, but he still had a lot of training to undergo. One afternoon he was training with his uncle, but suddenly he saw a long line of soldiers coming towards the dojo- at least ten rows of men in pairs of two, led by a man who wore an unmistakably decorated helmet. The designs made it clear that he was on the side of the shogun. His uncle insisted that he hide, and Kanda obeyed. The few words that were exchanged are still clear in Kanda's mind.
"You must pick a side, Kanda-san," the general had said to his uncle. Same surname. "Unfortunately, I've no interest in taking sides," said his uncle, "with all due respect, I have never wanted to become a soldier and I will never become one." "Choose your next words carefully, Kanda-san." "Peace can be forged with words. Swords are a last resort. You have foolishly skipped your first attempts of words and have reverted to swords." "Kanda-san, I'm disappointed. Your brother was much more of a man than you." "My brother fought for a different shogunate." The general staggered and looked at the man with disbelief, and with that he drew out his sword and cried, "Then you are a traitor, Kanda, and you will pay with your life!"
The young Kanda could barely register what he had just witnessed. Without reason, without base, without any sense of honor or mercy, the general had run his sword through his uncle's gut. A few moments of pure silence passed, and with that the general pulled out his sword and kicked his uncle off to the side. "Search the house for survivors. Take what you want, including lives." With that, the general entered and came across the Kanda family's darkest secret, and most prized possession. The 'mugen'- a sword claimed to have the power to forge illusions, to fight back whole armies- yet nobody was known to ever have wielded it with success. Beside the sword was an hourglass with an unbloomed lotus flower mysteriously suspended in the top half. The general smirked, and made a motion to take them both- but was hindered when Kanda instinctively ran in front of both objects and spread his arms out protectively.
"Foolish child," the general said, "do you know what you are doing?" He raised his sword and was about to strike, but Kanda unwittingly grabbed mugen and blocked the attack. The sword began to glow and it started to control Kanda's arm- he had no control. He was dragged by the piece of metal- the blade lopped off the heads of all of the soldiers, the general- and once everyone was gone the blade pointed at Kanda's own abdomen. Without any intention whatsoever, he plunged the blade into his gut, then pulled it out and flung the sword across the room. He collapsed and laid there, suffering. He thought he was going to die- until he saw the lotus in the hourglass bloom before his eyes. As it bloomed, he looked at the gash left on his stomach; it had already stopped bleeding, and it was closing. A tattoo of an unusual character formed on Kanda's chest- it was a word, a letter, of some language he was unfamiliar with. He stood up and tried to wield the sword again- it again aimed itself at his stomach and tried to stab him- but he flung it away once more. Kanda would have to train even more if he wanted the sword, but he knew that the sword was not made for any other man. It was wrought for him.
Somehow, news of the mugen reached the Dark Religious Organization; an organization nestled in the Vatican City of Italy. A finder and an exorcist was sent to the dojo where Kanda had not left since the death of his uncle. They found him sitting before a crudely made grave with dirtied hands from burying the body, with mugen and the lotus by his side. [end the 'fill in the gap' part]
Kanda was brought to headquarters and was quickly informed that he was 'compatible with innocence.' Innocence- it was the one weapon left to man to try to fight off and protect themselves from apocalypse. Across the world a man named the Millennium Earl was killing ruthlessly and recruiting human souls to forge into Akuma. Akuma are a type of gun; a huge, ghastly, monstrous gun, and was clearly unpleasing to the eyes. The more an Akuma killed, the stronger it would get, but the more pain the soul inside would suffer. The point of an exorcist was to save these souls- by killing the Akuma with a weapon forged from Innocence. Nothing else had the power to fight Akuma. He was trained to use the mugen correctly, but he has not yet perfected his technique. He has been successful in all missions presented to him, but he has only one concern- the wilting lotus in the hourglass. One by one, petals fall. He is familiar with one fact: that when all the petals have fallen, or when the flower is destroyed, he will die.
He has one true, unsaid goal, yet he still often finds himself wishing that the flower would just wilt, shrivel up, and blow away. |
